What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient healing wisdom using needles, cups, massage, moxibustion, and lifestyle changes that help bring better health and balance to you in body, mind, and spirit. We look at the whole person and try to find the root cause and not just treat the results of that cause, which are the symptoms.  Acupuncture can be used as a form of acute care, long-term care or preventative care using various modalities such as needles, cupping, gua sha, moxabustion, electrostimulation, lifestyle changes, and various other methods that are included in this medicine.

Acupuncture Tools

Needling

There are over 2,000 recognized acupuncture points throughout the body. By stimulating these points, acupuncturists aim to restore the proper flow of qi and re-establish balance between opposing forces known as yin and yang.

When needles are inserted it is believed to activate the body’s central nervous system, leading to biochemical changes that promote healing and well-being. These changes can include the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins and other neurotransmitters

Cupping

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine that involves placing special cups on the skin to create suction. This suction is believed to draw blood to or away from specific areas of the body, which may help alleviate various health issues. The practice has been used for thousands of years across different cultures, including ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern societies. Various types of cups and styles of cupping are used at Bhakti Spirit including dry cupping, fire cupping, wet cupping using glass cups, plastic cups or silicone cups.

Moxa

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that involves the burning of mugwort leaves, known as moxa, close to the skin’s surface. This practice is believed to enhance healing effects when used in conjunction with acupuncture. The primary aim of moxibustion is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of vital energy (Qi), and maintain overall health

Gua Sha

Gua sha is a traditional East Asian healing technique that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tools or stones to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation. The practice is based on the concept of qi, or energy, which is believed to flow through the body. When this energy becomes blocked, it can lead to health issues, and gua sha is used to unblock and restore the flow of energy.

Electrostimulation

This is a modern adaptation of traditional acupuncture that incorporates electrical stimulation to enhance the therapeutic effects. However, in this case, electrodes are attached to these needles, allowing a small electric current to pass through them. This current typically produces a mild vibration or hum and can stimulate the acupuncture points more effectively than manual techniques used by practitioners. Electroacupunctre is great for many treatments such as for acute or chronic pain, constipation, neurological disorders, muscle tension, and many others.

Lifestyle Recommendations

Part of finding health in body, mind, and spirit is what you do or don’t do in your daily life. Lifestyle recommendations are the part YOU can play in your health and healing. We may touch on diet, sleep, stress reduction, relationships, honoring seasons, keeping warm and avoiding toxins.
